HomeArticlesCommon Errors When Submitting Apps Electronically

Everyone is submitting college applications online but with their easy  submission comes some serious problems. With the big rush to get your applications for ED and EA in on time, just be sure to take some cautionary steps to prevent mishaps. Once you press the submit button it’s gone! These tips were sent by a colleague in Washington DC. who says she received these suggestions from the makers of electronic applications. Some might seem vague but are nevertheless important:

  • Read the instructions. This sound simple but many people don’t bother.
  • Don’t wait until the last minute.  Your computer could crash or the internet won’t be working.
  • Make sure your email address is correct.
  • Don’t forget to disable pop-up blockers. If you can’t see parts of the application this may be the reason.
  • Use the correct browser. Check the instructions (first item above) to see which versions are required.
  • Check each colleges requirements and deadlines. The Common Application makes it simple but keeping up with all the supplements can be tedious.
  • Don’t forget to save data and log out. Work may be lost if left unattended too long.
  • Using the “back” button can cause data to be lost or not properly savedto the application.
  • Check to see that you don’t click on the wrong item in a drop down menu.
  • Entering incorrect data like your social security number or date of birth can cause all kinds of problems for you and your application. Double check your information.
  • Don’t forget to upload important documents like your essay which has required so much work.
  • Review your applications for spelling, grammar errors and truncated text.
  • Print out your whole application and proofread it before you submit it.
  • Have your parents proof it too. Make sure nothing important was left out.
  • Don’t forget to submit all signatures required by the Early Decision Agreement, the student, parent and the counselor.
  • Leave time for payments to clear. Credit cards can sometimes take up to 48 hours.
  • Provide accurate information for your teachers who are sending recommendations for you.
  • Follow the directions for submitting the Arts/Athletics supplement.
  • Don’t forget to sign the document electronically or it won’t submit.
  • Verify that the submission process is complete before logging out.
  • Follow up with fees and the required supplements.
